Since 2010 Markus is advocating for EU public finance to catalyse the transition away from fossil fuels towards 100% renewables and fully energy efficient economies. Main fields of his advocacy, research, monitoring and coordination efforts are fossil fuel subsidies and the EU funds, in particular the EU budget and the European Investment Bank including the Juncker “Investment Plan”.
Based in Brussels he is working with the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council and representatives from industry, local authorities and civil society. He is networking with national campaign groups all over Europe.
Before joining Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe in 2016 Markus has lead the CEE Bankwatch Network and Friends of the Earth Europe campaign on greening EU funds.
