James Copping has worked in a variety of roles in the European Commission since joining in 2001. He is currently a Policy Officer in the Automotive and Mobility Industries Unit responsible for developing and monitoring policy on the competitiveness of Europe’s automotive sector. In particular, he is helping to co-ordinate the Commission’s European Battery Alliance initiative designed to use available EU instruments to establish mass manufacturing of battery cells in the EU together as part of a complete, innovative and competitive value chain. Among these responsibilities, he is involved in various programmes to support training and upskilling including the recently launched ALBATTS project on identifying competences and developing training schemes for the battery sector.
