Energy efficiency
This event aims at discussing the most critical problems local authorities of new member states are facing as well as succesful initiatives and solutions in implementing the EU objectives. The goal is to accelerate the rythm of action in these countries, incl. the signatures of the Covenant of Mayors. Networking activities will be promoted. Local authorities and partners involved in the MODEL project will serve as a basis for discussion.
A series of topics are proposed for discussion to make evidence of specificities that have to be taken into account (remaining old habits, lack of human capacities, financing issues and opportunities, governance, etc.). Outputs of the MODEL projects are also used to show how a project supported by the IEE programme can help the Covenant of Mayors process.
This event will act as a major input for networking activities, for encouraging cooperation between local authorities and with national partners in order to start / develop / pursue the implementation of local sustainable energy policies and encouraging cities for becoming signatories of the Covenant of Mayors.
Furthermore the 2nd ''MODEL award'' will be handed over at this occasion thus promoting the most significant achievements of the MODEL pilot cities, bring a wide and international recognition to the winning city and at the same time enhance all NMS local authorities to go ahead and implement innovative initiatives in the field of sustainable energy.
Taking into account the political dimension of the event, Mr Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, MEP from Silesia in Poland, has been asked to sponsor this event.
