What future for the Ecodesign policy?

Introduction
The Ecodesign Directive is one of the EU's most powerful tools to decrease energy use and rid the market from the most polluting products. The requirements already adopted for nine product classes under this directive are expected to avoid the use of 337TWh of electricity per year by 2020, equivalent to the electricity consumption of Italy. However, this will not be sufficient to compensate for the foreseen growth of the stock and bring absolute savings.
For more than a year, Cool products for a cool planet has been drawing attention to this policy process and suporting an ambitious implementation of the EuP directive.
2010 will be a decisive year for this implementation: the minimum requirements for boilers and water heaters will be discussed and adopted by the EuP reglatory committee, along with measures on other important product groups such as air-conditioners, computers or monitors.
These votes represent a make-or-break point for the Ecodesign: they will determine whether or not this policy will finally trigger absolute energy savings.
