Launch of Smart Islands Declaration

The Smart Islands Initiative is launching its manifesto to use smart solutions to improve life on islands and to support Europe’s transition to a sustainable energy system.

On 28 March 2017, representatives from European island authorities and communities will present the Smart Islands Initiative at the European Parliament in Brussels. At the same event, members of the initiative will sign the Smart Islands Declaration, a manifesto to transform its 300 islands into smart, inclusive and thriving societies able to resist the impacts of climate change and lead Europe’s transition to a low-carbon, secure, sustainable energy system.

The Smart Islands Initiative builds on a long-standing collaboration between European islands and aims to develop islands as laboratories for technological, social, environmental, economic and political innovation.

The event will be hosted by 12 MEPs representing Member States with islands, led by Greek MEP Eva Kaili. It builds on the first Smart Islands Forum, held in June 2016 in Athens, Greece.

This year’s EU Sustainable Energy Week Policy Conference (EUSEW 2017) focuses on the Clean Energy for All Europeans package which points to the strategic value of islands as test beds for pilot innovations and drivers of the transition to clean, sustainable secure energy. ‘Smart Islands’ is also a new category in this year’s EU Sustainable Energy Awards, which will be presented on the first day of the conference.

Lead, share or inspire ideas on how islands can support the energy transition. Apply to host a networking activity at EUSEW 2017 by 31 March or organise an Energy Day any time before the end of June.
